Behaviors Across the Transition to Adolescence (BETA)

The BETA study followed a sample of youth (approx. 11-14 years of age) who had been part of the TIKES longitudinal study at the University of Missouri.

In this study, we aimed to establish 1) continued risk for adjustment problems (e.g., anxiety symptoms, social withdrawal, and poor peer relationships) in the children characterized as fearful as toddlers and those showing those adjustment problems in kindergarten; and 2) identified moderators of the relation between early fearful behavior and maladjustment. For instance, we focused on parents’ own anxiety, high parental monitoring and early perceived pubertal timing.
